A little background on the problem: a queen bee normally does all the hive’s egg-laying, and she puts out pheromones that suppress the workers’s ability to lay. A few workers will always manage to lay eggs anyway; normally there aren’t enough of those to cause a big problem, and the bees will manage the situation themselves. But now and then a LOT of workers will lay eggs, as described in the article.
