I have a lot of those. This one occurred in the bathroom.

Has there ever been a person who had conscious memories of potty training?

I was born with a constricted urethra. This became apparent once I was out of diapers. I’d sit on the potty for ages. Drip, drip, drip. I can remember doing that, but not the actual potty training. Anyone else?

The urethra problem probably helped me teach myself to read, as I occupied myself with Little Golden Books during the long sessions, so it wasn’t all bad. It was surgically corrected when I was 3, but by then I’d mastered phonics anyway.

I still have some flashes of memory there, as my parents made a plastic wee wee and funneled water through it into a kiddy portapotty for my Grover doll. That said, I remember that doll far more than I remember actually doing the deed, which is more of a vague sort of maybe-memory.

I think we all pee and poo so much in our lives that it takes a truly extraordinary experience of one to stick in one’s mind. (I do have a few but I will refrain from sharing.)
