Well, he should have been in there. I have just finished L. Sprague de Camp’s biography of H. P. Lovecraft, who, it turns out, could sing quite well (countertenor).

Lovecraft’s life was, all in all, a waste. Yes, he gave us a new type of fiction, but he could have been and done so much more had he not been emotionally crippled, by a mother who wanted a girl ( you know the family would be in court a lot these days), and physically crippled by a condition that turned off his body’s mammalian ability to maintain a steady temperature. This would be a big problem in any case, and a REALLY big problem if you insist on living in frigid New England.
Also spare a thought for Sonia Greene, whose selfless love for her Howard comes through loud and clear. As much as anything else. Lovecraft’s bio is a tragic love story.
