The good news is, school’s been out about a week and we haven’t heard the Screech Owl, so we think they’ve moved. For those just joining us, the Screech Owl is a kid, 8-10ish, who likes to stand in the alley on warm nights and screech between midnight and dawn. I have seen the cops roll down the alley, stop to chat with her. and roll right on, so I can only assume that Ma Screech Owl has a boyfriend or relative working for the city. And now the Screech Owl family is someplace else. Yay!

In bad news, our wonderful nice quiet neighbors who never bothered anybody have also moved out, not that they had any choice. They were evicted. I noticed this because there are signs, literally, that the area is starting to gentrify and I suspect the landlord seized whatever excuse he could find to get them out in order to sell the house. Now, gentrification is good if you own the house, as we do, but awfully hard on renters like Mr. and Mrs. Quiet. I hope they were able to find another place.

Signs of gentrification so far: 2 of those signs that are in several languages that say something like “We welcome everyone [as long as they think exactly like us].” One wildly overgrown yard (not mowing is In with the PMC around here) with a sign. A couple of pit bulls that I haven’t been seeing walked in weeks. A golden retriever, a Sheltie, and a husky that I HAVE seen. I also got just a glimpse of a curly black dog—I didn’t get a good enough look to tell if it was a puli, or a poodle that had missed its last 47 dog-groomer appointments. If it WAS a puli, this house could become a gold mine. I’m hoping to sight a bulldog. Bulldogs are the best way to use a dog to say “I can afford this and you can’t, ha ha,” because it’s so expensive just to keep the poor things alive, so if I start seeing bulldogs, the money is descending upon us and the for-sale sign will go up.
